Honestly can't remember a better/worse time to be into soundtracks and vinyl

Anyone feeling burnt out on all this stuff? I'm starting to become less interested in it all. I'm not sure why, maybe the titles are less exciting these days for me. That isn't to say I won't be into them musically when I give them a spin...but I guess all the hype and the variants and the preordering and the rising prices and the delays and the reissues of reissues...it's just all becoming too much it feels like.

@ghostfires : feeling exactly the same way here...surprised myself saying "i'll pass on that one" quite a few times recently

My preorder list is pretty lengthy right now as well. I am feeling *financial* burn-out, but certainly not musical burn-out or lack of interest and enthusiasm. I could not be more excited to receive the new presses of A Fistful of Dollars and Once Upon a Time in the West. The Candyman OST is also something that is going to see heavy rotation in my home.

Don't even get me started on Cannibal Holocaust...

I'm feeling you @ghost. It's definitely riding a wave....though I'm not complaining too much.

I've been into soundtracks since I was in my early teens, and can't remember a more exciting time for my hobby since the heyday of back then - going in to Virgin Megastore on a saturday afternoon and coming away with A Nightmare on Elm Street, Reanimator, Tangerine Dream scores, the latest Carpenter, Romero, etc : all sorts of stuff that was about everything I really loved at that time and still do.

This board definitely facilitates the overkill for me though. It has become a place where I'm marketed to (in a good way though, don't misunderstand me!) and it fucking works. The part of me that remembers the time when vinyl was on it's ass, and I lost the passion for my hobby cuz I fucken hated CDs, and then in the last few years it's kicked back in again with a vengeance - partly for fear of missing out on something great, that will be prohibitive and out of my reach down the line (ie Lost Highway is a great example! Grrrrrr......) *

Self control is the only defense I have against these instincts, and to be honest - it just fails me a lot of the time. But it's totally on me, I support these niche, boutique, independent labels who are "enabling" me right down the line.

If they could just back off on the hype/collectability variant BS just a tad....it would be 100% gold



* (Having said that - sometimes it's just about patience right? if you'd told me yesterday that through a tip-off on the boards, I'd be ordering Tron Legacy for sensible bucks...well, I'd a been skeptical. But re-issues is a MASSIVE part of the vinyl market now, and if you wait long enough......)

I've been thinking about this...does anyone else cringe when they see the 'New OST vinyl releases heads-up!' thread has been updated for fear that you're going to have to spend more money? I always hope that it's an update about some crappy release I don't care about.

Totally agree. And if you regularly follow this forum like we do, then you'll feel like you should be buying some new vinyl nugget every other day.

Have found it difficult to go 'cold turkey' but the amount of new product is verging on overwhelming. And because most of it is limited, if you don't order straight away you feel you're risking losing out.

That said, once you eventually receive that new release you've been waiting ages on and traded that kidney for, all the shenanigans you went through to get it (staying up past midnight waiting on a drop) fade away...

The thing of it is.....if we were sat in a pub, I could justify every damn one of those listed as essential.

I've obviously got a bit of a problem, here...

I have 71 things on my preorder or ordered and in the mail list at the moment...it's the longest it's ever been. That's not all soundtracks or scores by any means but a good chunk of it is.

I'm figuring this will all die down at some point and we'll kinda miss it but I have the same problem with worrying about missing out on things.

The worst part of all this is something arives, gets listened to once and then gets filed so i can get through the next thing. I barely have time to listen to anything but the new arivals most of the time. And I already have enough records that it would probably take most of the rest of my days to listen to each of those again once each.

i've been collecting soundtracks on CD since I was a teen myself. I remember taking train to 42nd street to the Virgin Megastore having saved just enough to buy a soundtrack or two. I would spend hours in the store trying to make the right decision before coming away with what I though to be the right choice(s). Now, is is stupendous to see soundtracks getting the attention they deserve.

Really sucks, however, that so much of it is limited and so us lovers of music have to fend and spend to make sure we get what we want. But, yes, I too find it frustrating and tiring having to spend so much. I wish there was just enough to go around so that I can can wait a week, or two, heck even a month before taking the plunge. I have to admit that it was fun at first but that wearing out very quick. Not saying I'm not enjoying the releases but I'm not enjoying the frenzy surrounding the releases

You guys who are not enjoying it so much...... Is it because you only collect soundtracks and don't want to miss out and are overwhelmed by the releases? or are you tired of vinyl collecting in general? (I learned today that overwhelmed and Whelmed mean the same thing!!)

Personally I wouldn't say I collect soundtracks as such, I'm into them but they only make up maybe 30-40% of what I buy so i don't chase releases and get sad if i miss out on releases and i only go for stuff I know ill love the music. I've been in @lazybens situation before where id listen to something once and then never again, and I decided a long time ago that won't happen again. Smaller collection, more listens.

With that mantra I have listened to the Atoms 'A Winged Victory for the sullen' and Deaf Center's 'Recount' everyday for the past 3 weeks.

I agree this forum is the devils doing though for dangling carrots but its a great resource along with VC and Modern Vinyl and is a great time for buying vinyl

Don't get me wrong, am very happy with the vinyl resurgence - with sales at their highest since the mid 1990s if various articles and surveys are to be believed - and also admire these cool labels run by seemingly passionate and like-minded individuals.

After a few months of frenzied buying of cool horror and sci-fi soundtracks though, like others here I'm realising you can't get 'em all when they're now coming thick 'n' fast - and easing back on the pedal a little. Part of that's financial (especially with Xmas on the way), part of it is it's becoming a full time job trying to keep up with Twitter updates on when something may be dropping etc...

PS... isn't the band called A Winged Victory for the Sullen and the LP title 'Atomos' - sorry to be pedantic.

Yes, have the first 'A Winged Victory...' LP and was wondering whether this latest one was worth it - didn't grab me at first what I'd heard online, but perhaps this sort of music needs time to 'seep in'

I think its their best work. Its maybe not a "sample the sound" kind of an album rather than a dim the lights and sip a rum with a fluffy jumper on kind of an album.

I love it. Just take your duvet along when you go see them!

I just donated 1500 records and prob have at least 1500 more to donate soon. I buy and sell collections. So a couple coming in here and there isnt bad.

Rumors on a couple on Ed's list: Little Miss Sunshine RSD release on swirl vinyl. And Spacelab tweeted that they are doing direct store release and something special for District 9.

One thing that can help with burn-out is to just feel willing to let stuff go. I try to not be a completist or buy multiple variants, and generally make an effort to be "choosy". It's easy to fail on those efforts when the money is there in the bank account, but it is something I am trying to be better at.

I'm not burnt out on buying vinyl, I'm totally in love with music on vinyl. I'm just more excited now for really simply releases that don't have a ton of hype around them (not just referring to soundtracks here)...I don't like buying something just because I'm being hit with ads about how great it is and how much STUFF comes with it, nor do I like to buy a record just because everyone else is and I don't want to miss out...but it seems like lately thats all it is with all these soundtrack issues and reissues.

I'm not faulting the labels - they're striking while the soundtrack craze is hot. I'm sure it'll fall off at some point - there are too many people buying soundtracks that probably are not as into them as they think, and as they move onto something else - they'll start dumping all these collectors editions, crazy variants, etc and they'll fail to support the labels at some point, which of course will shut some down, while others will scale back all the crazy editions.

I think I'm just tired of being 'loud & proud' about getting all these soundtracks...there really isn't much that is special about any of it any longer, as the pressings are growing in number each time it seems like...things are widely available if you really want it...but the crazy flipper prices, the need to buy multiple copies of the exact same record...it's all just becoming too much, too expensive, and too uninteresting because the focus has shifted so far from the music.

I do love soundtracks because they have some of the coolest music - and I love that the labels like DW, WW, OWS, and so on have all the love in the world for putting cool soundtracks out, and I will of course to continue to support them, but I am giving up on ensuring I own the coolest version, the most limited edition, or buying soundtracks even if I'm unsure if I'll like it. I've purchased too many soundtracks lately trusting the label or the hype surrounding it rather than knowing for sure that I like the music. That has got to stop for me. It's all about the music or nothing!

Let's see… I've only got Wolf Cop and Boogeyman currently on my list!

Some folks here are obviously more hardcore collectors than me. Basically I get the LPs for the music. Anything else, colors, packaging etc is just a bonus. Like… I'm not into the Trick r Treat soundtrack, so I didn't go for it, even thought the packaging etc looks STELLAR! I know I'm just not gonna use (i.e. PLAY) it much. I find it hard to listen to the amount of albums I buy as it is! Quality over quantity for me! I like to soak-in an album and really get to know it. If I can't do that, it's not worth keeping it in my collection.
