Hi guys, I'll be taking my first trip to New York in a couple of weeks.

So the big question is: where are the best record stores?

It's gonna be a record blowout (just don't tell my girlfriend, otherwise I'll be sleeping in the street).

I'll be there a week from Monday, myself. I tend to hit up Generation and Other pretty regularly, but I've not really had a chance to make a good solid day of looking around the way I've wanted to. I'm usually there for a conference that occupies 90% of my non-sleeping time.

Generation's great for punk stuff, and Other -- while overpriced, at times, has a lot of left-of-center gems that make them worth seeing.

I went a few years ago and the best ones that I found were all in the East Village- at least 4 or 5. They were between 2nd Ave and Ave. A, and E 4th Street and E 14th. The only name I remember was Tropicalia, but each time I found a shop the staff helpfully told me where the others were. There's also a big one in Brooklyn near the first or second stop on the 'L' train after you leave Manhattan. Happy hunting.

Any other recomendations? I'm in Brooklyn for work for the week and am pretty sure my per diem should be spent on records not food.

Yea that's Rough Trade. I went there for RSD this year, they have a big selection and a friendly staff. Recommended

Ah my area of expertise! The East Village isnt what it once was but there are some holdouts. Check out:
Academy Records on E12th St between 1st ave and Ave A.
A-1 Records on E6th St between 1st Ave and Ave A
Good Records on E5th St between 2nd Ave and Bowery
Other Music on East 4th between Lafayette and Broadway

Greenpoint in Brooklyn has a bunch of great stores too. Look up Permanent Records, Record Grouch, Academy Annex and Co-op 87. All within walking distance of each other.

Happy hunting!

Academy Annex in Brooklyn was the best store I went to during my trip.

Other Music is worth a look in too.

Yesterday I hit the East Village shops that @noddy listed above (as well as a new one one block up from Other Music).

I was only looking for used stuff and I had the most luck at Good and Academy.

Time/weather permitting I'll try to make it over to the Greenpoint shops before the week is out.

(sorry @philball1974 I just hit up an existing thread that predates that one, but you might glean some of this info out and add it over there?)

Academy Annexe is not to be confused with Academy Records. I had the most luck with used stuff at the Annexe. It's near Greenpoint. Good luck!

I went to New York for the first time ever last year and made a point of visiting Other, which is great. While I was in there, a friend who didn't know I was in the US called and I was able to say "I'm in a record shop in New York", which, pathetically, gave me a large amount of pleasure!
