Thanks for heads up maxvelvet. May avoid the 7" though at Euro 16.50 - too many other goodies to warrant that price.
The review on BTF starts with the line:
"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is neither blackberries nor less than the perfect soundtrack to the most wonderful of western movies, the third and final act of the "Dollar Trilogy" directed by Sergio Leone."
He's right. Its not blackberries. Love that auto-translate :)

I'm frequently hearing the complaint about a lack of vinyl plants - that the only existing plants are the old ones from when vinyl was "the norm" (from the article: "Unfortunately, the few vinyl plants that remain operate in a near monopoly environment, so voting with our feet isn’t an option.")

With the resurgence of vinyl, one would think that more new plants would open - that it would simply be good business to do so...?

The problem Rasmus is that the complex machinery to press records just isn't made anymore. All is still pressed on machinery from back in the day. The smart plants kept their machines, those who sold them or had them dismanteled are now out of luck.

Also these machines need to be kept in working order by skilled engineers. There is nothing digital or electronic about them. Really old school.
Until an hydraulic and petrochemical company starts producing new models >> nothing will change for the current situation.

That's why you see so many companies offering vinyl pressings, but they are just brokers (they don't have the machines, they just go through the few ones who do). I think you can count 'real' pressingplants worldwide on two hands.

An interesting fact - the majority of remaining DMM lathes were bought up by The Church of Scientology. There are supposedly none left in the US anymore, only in Europe. The last US one was sold a few years back, just before the vinyl boom.

They cut metal masters of L.Ron Hubbard's speeches, which were then buried in the desert. Nutjobs.

You basically have GZ VINYL in Eastern Europe, the biggest one in the world. They have a US office called 'Pirates Press'

Then a couple in Germany and MPO in France is also pretty big with offices allover Europe.

In the US you have URP, Erika and Rainbo. That's basically it.

Almost all of the others are brokers who order through the ones above.

Not that this is a bad thing. They can be better in communication, offer services to labels who do small runs, etc.. but mostly you'll pay extra as opposed working with the source. + may add time to the process.

It can be quite a jungle, I've worked with almost every plant worldwide. Prices, service and quality can differ extremely.

Hey @Static slightly off topic question here but, who do you use for cassettes?

Don't forget Record Industry in the Netherlands.

That brings me to a (very nerdy) question - are OWS & DW releases usually lacquer cut or DMM? Do you ever weigh up the advantages/disadvantages of each, or is it simply a price/convenience thing? I'm guessing they're all pressed at GZ, which is mostly DMM...

Yes, I'll probably forget a few.

All OWS records are pressed in the US by either Rainbo or Erika. These plants use lacquer cutting.
For me personally there is not that much difference between that and DMM. If the engineer is good, the cut will be good.

Didn't realise you use a US plant, considering you're based in Europe. That's interesting.

As for the DMM/lacquer thing, I suppose old soundtracks are generally more suited to lacquer anyway. I'm sure good engineers are hard to find - keep him/her close and never let go!

Been listening to this one (far cry) all week on spotify. On my RSD list :) Nice cover too!

Thanks for that info - it's something I've been trying to find out about for a while! Diudn't realise it was quite so scarce though...
The Scientologists owning the only DMM lathe in North America is a worry though - the thought of John Travolta having ready access to record producing technology is too terrifying a concept to behold.

Maybe we should pull our monies together, and offer to buy the machines from the church of dumbasses. Anyone interested?

King Kong (Original 1933 Motion Picture Score)
Music on Vinyl
7" vinyl
1000

Someone just gave me a heads-up on this. I don't recall seeing it on any of the order forms I came across this year. It might be UK/Europe only, in which case I would be super grateful is someone can get a hold of one for me. Let me know if you think you can help, I'm even willing to PayPal cash in advance if that's an issue. Or of someone stateside knows if this is a US release as well and maybe I just missed it?

This was listed on a suplimental RSD list we got about a week ago but the cost was way too much for me for a 7" (retail was $22-$24 if I remember right)

^^^ I was interested in this too, but didn't see anymore info on this.

Ack! That is quite a bit. I still want it though. Maybe... I will have to wait and see. If it is stateside, it will be one of those things I snatch up and hold and then see how much I am spending overall and then see if I will end up putting it back or not.

Yeah, I think it was the most expensive 7" listed this year. Maybe it is cheaper through other distributors, I am not sure.

Can't wait for RSD, the greatest Nerd Holiday of them all.

Some info and the actual cover of "King Kong":

RSD 2014 / BLUE VINYL 7" Music On Vinyl
"King Kong is a classic pre-WW2 American fantasy monster/adventure. In 1991, it was deemed “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry." ;)
