Umm, well… so when I first moved to this area of Birmingham in the mid 90s, Moseley, it was pretty boho. Lot of music stuff swirling around this few square miles. I was doing my share of partying and would often see Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth around. Cut a long story short, I was dropping in on a new friend one afternoon who’s place was a notorious 24hr party spot - he lived in a former hair salon that he had painted black, never opened the curtains and there was always a disco ball spinning. I often stumbled out of there after many a night of shenanigans into ‘god’s holy flashlight’, having no idea it was the middle of the day. Anyways…. so this one afternoon I dropped by to collect some of my records and the place was, for once, empty. I figured he had just taken the dog for a walk so plopped down on the sofa. After a while the door flew open and in swept Kusworth with his trademark plastic carrier of booze and flinty German girlfriend in tow. I said hi, but they both completely blanked me and proceeded to put on quite a show - drunkenly stumbling around, screaming at each other, making out and shooting up right in front of me, either oblivious or uncaring. Very rock n roll. Then eventually they wandered off on their further adventures. I thought Kusworth seemed like a completely self involved a-hole, quite honestly, wrapped up in the worst excess of the BS Stones-wannabe rock lifestyle, and took the piss amongst friends whenever we saw him. Still love that Swell Maps record though ;)
