Finally got to see The Furious last night and loved it. First thing I'll address is that it's not as good as The Raid but not much is, it was an injection into arm of the withering martial arts genre that is still pushing people to make good action films just like this one. What The Furious does better is fight choreography, I know these fights won't be for everyone, they are a bit more on the goofy side at times with very clear inspiration from older HK films that are going for beauty & dance rather than all brutality (which was pretty much what The Raid went for). There are so many insanely complex fights in this film with long wide shots that allow you to see exactly what they are doing, not a ton of close up fast cutting. The final fight was seriously insane with what they pulled off, I was in awe many times through out that fight. Story wise it's a bit generic and some of the characters dialog is badly written with awkward delivery (the cops are the worst offenders here) but it all just kind of worked for me, it kept the kind of darker story line a little less depressing. Highly recommend any one into martial arts films to check it out, do not go in expecting The Raid and I think you'll have a good time

Go see it. It was the most I've laughed in the theater in a long long time. :)

After four weeks without movies I did get to watch some stuff.

Also The Furious. I didn’t like it as much as inksb did. I agree on the fight choreography, but I couldn’t get over the fact that people kept standing up when surely all of their bones were shattered…
Maybe I was taking it a bit too serious. But it was an entertaining watch.

Followed that one with Obsession. Let’s say I don’t get the hype. It was a very nice horror flick. But nothing more than that. And maybe I am getting old, but I often don’t really feel the younger stars I am seeing in these movies.

This weekend I finally get to find out with Backrooms is about.
And soon a watch of the newly released Whole Bloody Affair. And I want to watch Moneyball finally.

I think a lot of people are viewing The Furious as if it's a serious action movie with realism when it's more in line with the fantastical and unbelievable Hong Kong action films of the 80s. It's more about spectacle and the art of the fight and not realism. Case and point the man who got smashed upside the head with sledgehammer not dying (he's just a little scrambled)

Obsession was one that I kind of felt like it didn't live up to the hype as the credits rolled, I liked it a lot but didn't feel like it was any better than anything else as of late. Then I spent the next few days constantly thinking about it, what certain things meant, why they played out the way they did and catching little things I didn't initially think of while watching, which I can't say I've done for many newer films. So with that I do think it's a bit better than I first gave it credit for. Also coming from a super young director with a clear vision is very cool, I look forward to seeing what else he does in the genre going forward

I watched Backrooms this weekend, thought it was quite good. It took the whole liminal space horror thing and made it more engaging to watch than some of the previous ones I've seen. I foresee A24 trying to milk this concept though with lots of unnecessary sequels. Cast was solid and there's one scene in particular I thought was extremely effective and was my favorite part

Also watched Falling Down per a friends recommendation, some how had never even heard of this one. Michael Douglas is unhinged in it and carries the movie. Weirdly relevant to todays climate of privileged white man feels slighted and decides to go on violent tirade to show he's upset
