I think maybe the first thing to establish on this (or a new thread(s)) is what the goal is.

My original goal had been to talk about records - rare or obscure soundtrack records. i.e. this thread was for record collectors, not just film music enthusiasts.

There are already plenty of places on here for discussions about things you hope they might release on vinyl and things that have been recently released on vinyl. What I wanted was a place for us to talk about the stuff you find in the used soundtrack bin and flip your lid, or that you carefully craft your ebay watch list so that when a copy of this LP comes once every blue moon, you can snag it, etc.

I also didn't intend this for a discussion about a score if that score wasn't released on vinyl PDW ('pre death waltz').

So, release info is important, cover art is important. ("This was first pressed on Beat records in 1972 (cover) and then put out by Varese Saraband in 1980 (cover). I also heard there was also a Japanese EP of the main theme put out at some point but I have never seen it.") You should go as deep as you can, but if you can't go much deeper than what discogs tells you, that is fine too if you think it is a release others would be interested in learning about. Youtube clips of the music are a great idea.

I'm torn about whether this thread should preclude records that have been reissued recently and my gut says those should be fair game as long as the focus isn't on the reissue that we all know all about. i.e. if you do Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, it is because you want to talk about the Beat LP. You should mention the recent DW reissue, but that isn't the focus.

So, thoughts on this? should we create a new thread (or two)? should we power on with this one?

(and no, I wasn't thinking an LP had to be overly rare, just interesting and not 'obvious' to even the most newby collector)

I think when we first made the comment about this thread, in my mind it was to take the "now Spinning" idea but rather than just put a photo and say im listenign to this, give a review, sound sound cliops, reasons why you love it.

I see it as a great way to share albums that we may not have heard or have heard and also show our passion for the subject. For me I'd prefer it if the album is available on vinyl and its something you own so you can give the best possible review.

I'm guessing we may end up with multiple threads with different focuses, but I really want to have one for collectors of original soundtrack records. Maybe instead of 'deep cuts' i should have called it 'old cuts' or 'OG vinyl' or "musty records' or something (though luckily soundtrack collectors are a fastidious bunch, so even my 40 year old soundtrack records tend to be in very nice shape).

I'd also love to see something similar for library records, but not sure the board would be interested in that as much.

I like philball's idea of having one top level thread. There should be one thread purely for members to post if they want to subscribe to or unsubscribe from the participants' list.

Each review should have its own thread, maybe with the title 'Number - Album Name', so there would be a continuity, and people would know who was the last reviewer to nominate someone. Posts in each thread should relate to the soundtrack in question (comments, their own appraisal if they own the soundtrack, additional information, maybe links to outside reviews). That way, this could become a valuable resource for people if they need to know more about a specific soundtrack before purchasing it.

Just my two cents. And thanks to jmctodo for getting this rolling. I hope it gets some traction. Would be nice to get some serious soundtrack information for little known scores.

We could come up with a title format that would lead folks back to the instruction thread for more info.

oh, I think I didn't grok what you meant Phil, I have no idea if there should be a bucket created for these or if they should just intermingle with the general 'soundtrack forum' threads.

I figured if it had its own dedicated section it would act as a nice library for all to go through, especially as time goes on and new folks join.
