Excuse my ignorance, but could someone explain when the fact it's 'Limited Edition' labelling also makes it an exciting enough prospect to get hold of? I saw a record the other day which said a limited edition of 1750, now although fair enough it may be 'limited' in this day and age that still seems like a fair old number to me. So at what number do you guys get excited about enough to make you purchase? Or are you not swayed by limited editions at all? Just wondered out of curiosity really.

I am, sadly, swayed by limited editions, when the edition is limited enough that there is a danger it may sell out if I don't buy.

If it's a large number - 1,000 or more - you're more likely to leave it a week or two for when/if you have the money, depending how hyped it's been prior to release, whereas if it's 500, 300 or less of an artist you know always sells out fast, then you know you have to jump in pretty soon to avoid being otherwise stung for £50 on eBay or Discogs later when it is sold out.

Getting upfront knowledge of this kind of stuff is why this board is at times both a blessing and a curse. The limited-ness promotes the vinyl buying habit - especially when new releases are hyped with the 'one time only pressing, 500 units' spiel

It's all just a marketing tool at the end of the day, though people do directly appear to correlate limited-ness with actual real-world value, from the people who sell the record... to us lot who buy 'em ;)

I kind of get annoyed at the limited edition thing. It's not attractive as a consumer, although I understand that it's necessary in many cases and in some is contractual. But it gets easily infuriating when soundtracks come along like the Dagoreds that are 500 units each, so it's often a strike now or lose out situation.

Agree with both of you and i have been swayed many times by limited editions in the past. I just find it interesting how much of a pull it has. I'm also not entirely comfortable with my own smugness at buying really limited edition vinyl, but I buy it all the same.

@filmsonwax... agreed it does get wearing, particularly when the limited nature prompts you to jump in on something barely before you've had time to listen to any sound clips and decide fully if it's for you.

There is also something of the lemming syndrome - i.e if enough people on here are chattering excitedly, that may also prompt you to make the jump (though fortunately the tastes displayed on here are rarely that wide of the mark) :)

Anyway, yeah, staying on the new OST topic, the latest Dagoreds look cool. From recent memory they are usually 500 units. That said, there are also many more fish in the (vinyl) sea... and if I miss something, there is usually another 'must have' along soon

true enough. like @spun said, 1000 or more allows me to really think about and try to track down sound clips. the UNDER POMPELMO, which arrived today and i am listening to as i type, being limited to 300, i had to jump on it immediately (damn, i'm glad i did), and when i was adding it to my collection in discogs, the cheapest one on there is $76. damn! not bad compared to the first pressing prices, of course, but i just bought it a few weeks ago for something like $30(?). even with the dagoreds that are limited to 500, they still hang out quite a while on LITA's site, so i don't sweat those as much. we're really getting into a niche at that point, so there is time. and even if they do sell out, alot of the aren't getting huge markups on the secondhand market.

I was really bummed out when I saw the preorders for Stelvio Cipriani - La Polizia Ringrazia LP from Dagored pop up today.
Just because it was on my short wish list of things I wanted to put out.

But really looking forward to it regardless.I'm sure they will do an amazing job.

Just threw on the japanese 7 seas release.

Thanks Hatter, but I think the version in your mind is a lot cooler than reality. They mostly get filled way more with pop songs that are Halloween related than actual horror, though my collection of actual themes has grown, especially in the last year or so. I started a thread last year looking for tips on others to get, and while I haven't updated it since October if you or anyone wants to take a look and makes suggestions I'm always looking for help. http://www.spintheblackestcircles.com/f ... kebox-45s/

Thanks for the heads up. These look to be pretty essential, not heard of them before, and I thought I was pretty clued up on Umiliani's output.

@spencer

Ha - this is exactly the sort of hype we were just discussing above... what's your take on the whole limited edition madness Spencer? Exciting or a pain in the ass - or a bit of both?

Do records need this sort of hype behind them to make them financially viable to press?

Genuinely interested to get an insider's perspective ;)

OK
here is my view
Spun
Labels want to sell out , the market is pretty much oversaturated right now (I mean who would have thought two years ago we'd be saying 'not another morricone reissue, that's the 6th one this month' ?
So doing these crazy low runs means you get a quick return without worry, personally for me I want the LTD edition to be just ltd enough ! So it sells out but satifies demand without making fans / customers angry - case in point AGWHAAN I wanted to do the screening version as it was a cool way of celebrating the release for folks that were at the party but I knew I need a higher edition to sell online to make sure fans got them , I think we achieved this and people were happy.
Personally as a consumer I am findinging it harder to get excited by things at the moment as there is way too much out there, I am pretty selective in what I buy and honestly I am trying to channel that excitement into OUR releases at the moment , so we have the best looking and most exciting titles around. Manufactured scarcity is a funny thing, if you get the record you are happy , if not then yes it is a total pain....

That's a second version of that contempo l'istrutoria e'chiusa:dimentichi, the black one was something like 500 copies. Hell, you can still find the last dagored version around if you look hard enough.
