Anyone know if Norman Records is carrying the color edition of Slumber Party? Or if it's the clear edition? They're listing it on their site as colored vinyl...I was going to order Godzilla and throw in SPM if it's the color edition. I've emailed but haven't heard back yet...just curious if anyone here happened to buy a copy of SPM from Norman....

EDIT: Never mind! Just got an answer, unfortunately just clear. This is going to get expensive trying to get SPM and Godzilla shipped to the US from different locations in the UK. Ouch!

I'm curious to hear some thoughts on how these lovely Death Waltz releases actually sound. Obviously there is great care taken in the packaging and colored vinyl, and of course they are impressive. But I'm wondering if my experience with 2 of the 4 RSD lp's are common to the Death Waltz output.

They actually sound great. Never had an issue and always thought the sound was top notch.

unfortunately with colored vinyl it's always a crapshoot as to how much surface noise there will be.

I'd say sound quality is very hit and miss. To be fair, DW are better than most and are always improving. As Static14 said, coloured vinyl is inherently unpredictable, that's just how it is. Sadly, a lot of people who've jumped on this soundtrack craze are more concerned with how records look than with how they sound.

If you're worried about sound quality but still want coloured wax, then avoid the splatter/marbled editions and stick to the solid colours or transparent editions. ;)

It never fails to amaze me how many people buy crazy coloured vinyl and then complain about the sound. I mean, what do you expect? There's always a compromise with these things, that's just how it is.

The only DW release I've got (and I have all of them) that I would say wasn't at least good sound quality is the haze "the fog". I gave up on trying to clean that up and just bought a black copy in the end. Most of them have been great bearing in mind a lot of the source tapes aren't necessarily audiophile grade. No problems at all with the RSD releases here.

Vinyl is by design an inherently flawed medium and adding fancy colours and effects isn't going to help so, as others have said, go for a plain colour if you're worried.

Well with the RSD releases the crazy colored vinyl was the only option. But I think you've just pointed out the problem here, that there are many collectors out there who could care less how a record may sound and are more interested in the collectability of a particular release, and I think companies are starting to respond to this. Would anyone who works for Death Waltz actually say this to potential customers? "We have this awesome looking record we're releasing, but I hope you don't care how it sounds because there's a good chance it's going to sound like an old scratchy record from your Dad's basement."

Christ on a crutch! I go away for a day and a half and miss all the hubbub. Godzilla is a sterling idea and a welcome surprise. Cheers, gang!

There is a lot more to sound quality than the amount of surface noise. In my opinion the dw records seem to be really well mastered, nice and loud.

Hmmm...those two comments seem to be at odds.

There's a lot more to good mastering than just volume. In my opinion, good mastering is more evident in the details, in the low end. Volume is often a distraction. It's a bit of a trend these days to cut things as loud as possible - nothing wrong with that of course, but it's not everything.

I agree the mastering on DW releases has been pretty exceptional (especially considering the source material half of the time!) - it's more a pressing issue to do with colour effects. Simple as that.

Anyway, DW are now offering alternatives - black, solid colours, transparent - so that really should be enough to please everyone (which is never an easy task!) :)

Does City Of The Living Dead come with the mp3's ??

Yeah, the Haze and Splatter copies of The Fog have noise, but it's probably more noticeable because it's such a quiet score. The gold one is silent, so that's my listening copy, but come on, that haze vinyl is beautiful! Same goes with my blue copy of Prince of Darkness; it's just a quiet score, though my black copy of that one is silent.

I find the whole thing a bit mystifying...I guess it's sort of like collecting baseball cards or action figures, collectability seems to be the top priority.

True, there is more to mastering than volume, I guess I could have phrased that better.

The point I was trying to make is the quality of sound you hear when you play a record isn't wholey determined by the amount of surface noise, and surface noise is surely part and parcel of being a fan of vinyl.

This seems to come up every couple of weeks, can we knock it on the head now , colour bad black good (atleast when it comes to audio fidelity) that is after all why spencer offered the black sub. I'd rather talk more about how cool the godzilla cover is :)

Yeah my bad, I'd must've mistaken this place for a discussion forum.

But yeah, that cover. Oh man! :)

I recently got a new turntable and I have been snatching up a lot of new vinyl and I have been happy with the Death Waltz titles for sure. The only problem I had was with Bronx Warriors, there was a lump in the vinyl. makes a nice thud sound when the needle hits it.
