OWS - considering you also have the rights for digital distribution, any chance the vinyl will come with digital download codes? Thanks in advance!

So are there 300 limited in U.S. total? Or is it 300 of red and 300 of white?
By fluppeco
#4332
it's split 300 for US and 300 for EU. Don't know how the colors are divided but I guess it might be even also. so 150 red and 150 white for US.

Casually took a look at my email & found the OWS msg so went directly to Light in the Attic to order the lim.ed. I was pleasantly surprised at the price as I was expecting $25+. Definitely hoping it'll ship out a little earlier next month!

Also looking forward to The Hills Have Eyes!

First of all, I want to thank you all for your support. Response has been amazing.

We made sure there were enough limited editions so everyone had a fair share to get one. We also made sure that half of those were available through Light In The Attic so that our American friends did not have to pay their asses on postage.

We sold about half the stock in the last hours, there are still copies available but if you want one... I don't think they will last past this week.

You guys are the best! Keep an eye open for our next releases.

@One Way Static

Hi,

i am new in this forum & just registered to ask you an important question to your first release, i just preordered directly on your site.
i usually prefer vinyl over cd or any other digital or analog format because of its more detailed & even more realistic, stereoscopic sound, although these pros are overshadowed by the known cons like sizzling noise, etc. .
The previous mentioned benefits depend on the source, the vinyl has been taken from: The best source usually is the first generation studio mastertape because it is a lossless copy of the original multitrack studio- session master finally mixed on two mono or two stereo tracks.

Now i am wondering, why i am the first in this forum, who asks, which source you took for your lp-release of David Hess´ amazing soundtrack. As i already own the hard-to-get first two releases on cd, a simple unremastered re-release would be just disappointing, although the cover-artwork & package looks nice. Also, all of the four bonustracks have been previously released on the soundtrack-cd+s, so the only two things left, that would make this (re-)release special, are the limited coloured vinyl & the limited (and imho expendable) flexi with the radio spots (instead of a 7- or 12-inch bonus-lp including the four bonustracks. That would be the real McCoy! But this seems to be a deliberate concept, because the fans(incl. myself) have to pay twice to get all the tracks = double cash!).

"We worked long and hard to bring you the best possible version of this classic album. No efforts or costs were spared"
Regarding the above quote of you, i beg you to clear my question about the source & an optional realized remastering. I really hope, you´ll not resent me my criticism and skeptical questions (i actually were afraid to ask ;)

I really hope, my suspicion turns out to be wrong. If so, i will apologize a thousand times!

@ Sam Hain

This is actually a pretty good question, I talked about this before but can't remember where.
So I'll try to shed some light on this for you. I don't mind criticism or skeptical questions, if you're nice you always get a chat with me.

To my knowledge there have only been 3 releases of the LHOTL soundtrack.

- A german vinyl called 'Mondo Brutale' Last House was released over there under that name. Later as 'das letze house links' . I have never seen it and can't even confirm it's existence or release year 100% . There is no way in telling what masters were used.

- A CD released, mastered and produced by David Hess on his own label 'Rock Bottom Rules' signed by himself limited to 1000 copies. (3 bonus tracks) released in 1999

- A CD (I think it was german) with the same tracks as the one above (Not sure if there is a 4th bonus track on this). It had the generic later DVD poster art as a cover. Hardly ever seen it pop up.

-- there are some tracks on bootleg vinyl/cassette comps floating around taken straight from VHS sources.

There was never the intention for a proper soundtrack release when the movie was made. You have to remember that this was a 'first' movie for both Craven and Cunningham and they did not even know if it was going to get distribution, let alone a soundtrack. Also this is 1972 we are talking about and a grindhouse movie. There are no 'first generation separate sound masters' and all that.

We used the CD master David produced as our master for the release. This came from semi damaged German movie DAT TAPES (provided by German distributor ATLAS) and were the only ones decent enough to source from.

We chose this as master for a couple of reasons:

1) contractual : David co-mastered and produced these, this was his vision on his own songs and sound. We could not mess with this, and would not want to either.

2) it was the only and best master available, so not much choice here. But that's ok, it's a good one.

3) Sourcing/mastering again from the un-restored Dat tapes by someone other than David would have been pointless, the outcome would be the same at best.

Now here's the important part : We had it remastered for vinyl by engineers at Rainbo Records. This is important to mention because these guys are top of the line. They are in the biz since the fifties. They did a great job with the material.

Yes, it has it's small cracks and pops and glitches. But it sound great, raw and brutal like the movie.
This is in no way an audiophile recording. It could never have been, our focus was with getting it out there for the fans with the best possible sound and packaging.

As for the bonus tracks and flexi, this is really simple : there was no more room on the vinyl to add bonus tracks. Yes we could have crammed some of them on it and pushing the acceptable limit for vinyl, but there would have been too much sound quality loss.

Making those extra's available on the cd/cassette/digital versions was practical, not 'money making/double cash' intended. If we did a double LP for just four tracks, then it would have been even more expensive for the fans.

There is something for everyone's budget:

* a higher priced collectable version with a flexi
* a standard vinyl pressing
* a cd pressing
* a cheap priced digital download
* even a cassette

So, the choice was entirely with the fan, a version for every budget.
Once again, our focus was with making it 'available'. The 1999 cd version fetched 200+ euro on ebay and the likes. So it was time to get this out there at democratic prices.

'no efforts and cost were spared' ... could not be more true. I worked on it for over a year and spent the money for a small car on it ;-)

So, I hope this answers your questions. Thanks for ordering, you won't be disappointed.

I love this answer. It's everything you wish for (and more) from a small label in response to a query about their sources, ethos and path-to-release process. And it ticks the box in each category.

Regarding "audiophile" soundtrack re-issues generally - for me (and I'm sure I ain't alone on this forum!) that side of it is most definitely a "bonus", and not the real prize: I've waited for 20 years to have an LP of the music from Hired Hand for instance, to have beautiful big artwork and a thick piece of wax to drop when I'm feeling in that special "Hired Hand" frame of mind. I don't, and have never, given the slightest fat crap about CD as a listening/collecting format. Convenient, cold sounding and at best a stop gap for OSTs until some beautiful fool focuses their precious energies on a vinyl release. And it must take quite a bit of energy in some cases.

For instance: When I discovered Scissor Tail's Hired Hand release....a part of my film+music+vinyl life/obsession was beautifully fulfilled. I coulda given a crap if the tracks were sourced from a vhs to be frank, but knowing that there are labels who care and do their best to source the best is what's important, surely? We're not talking about Sony doing a cheapo, crappy, carless job fer chrissakes.....the majority of these boutique/small labels are folks just like you and me ;)
