Before to realize, I purchased from him 3 records on Dec. 21st, marked as shipped on Dec. 28th. We'll see...

A lot of the items appear to be the same record , put back up at a later date and at a slightly lower price. He hasn't actually sold that much, but has quite a bit of positive feedback for earlier sales, the 3 negavtives are all from the past month, which could indicate problems/delays within the postal system: December is a dangerous month for international orders, stuff that usually takes 1-2 weeks can take 6 weeks or more. Regular postal workers take vacations and get replaced by rookie temps (maybe even dishonest temps in some cases) and bad weather and christmas cards put extra strain on the system.

That being said, I would not order from someone with 3 negative feedbacks in such a short time....

I ordered one of the Studio Ghibli from him a few days ago. No shipping notification as of yet. Paid $35 for it with free shipping. To me that just seems like a fair price. Hopefully it comes. If not I'll get a refund *shrugs*

It's not about delay on delivery, can be understood.
The point is: do you think is credible and probable this man had 10x the Beyond, 9x Halloween variant B, 6x each Studio Ghibli variant?
Everything may be, but I don't think so.
After my purchase I asked him if he had other Mondo variants availaible, and he replied "Nothing unlisted"... And later started again to sell same kind of records...

How do eBay scams even work anymore? With everything being PayPal over there, does the scammer just hope to string people along until the window for filing a complaint closes? I see the hook though. Those prices are hard to beat.

He joined Ebay last May, perfect reputation for 6 months, Top Reliability Seller mark.
Then he woke up one day and began selling the same records to different people at affordable prices, and for a while this goes beyond suspicion.
Then exaggerated and made himself get carried away...

That's not what I meant. I understand the set up, but where is his pay off? What I want to know is how does he keep any of the scammed money when any buyer can get a refund on any undelivered item through PayPal? Doubly so through eBay.

After receiving a payment you are immediately able to withdraw money with a bank transfer.
After refunding cheated people, PayPal will try to rebuild on fraudulent seller, that probably will be gone in the meantime, or simply will not pay at all. Then I guess will start a lawsuit...

I received a refund yesterday as well. I guess I don't understand the point of fraudulenly running scams like thus. Eventually, the buyers will get refunded which will draw the money back out of you're paypal/bank accounts. If there is no tracking info, the buyer is guaranteed a refund.

Basically scam is against PayPal, because buyers are refunded, and PayPal will have a lot of difficulty to get their money back from fraud seller.
Then PayPal is certainly insured for that risk, and will pay an insurance company!

I posted about this guy in a different thread two weeks ago. Total fraud. Paypal gave me a refund. His feedback reviews are pretty funny. A few months back, somebody said "Stop flipping records".

I didn't realize it was possible to scam PayPal like this anymore. Every time I sell something through PayPal, the goods/services designation puts a hold on the funds for the cooling off period for the buyer. I can't access the funds at all. You're saying there is a way to withdraw frozen funds from a PayPal account with a bank transfer? I've never managed that and I wasn't even trying to rip anyone off.

I have been trying to decipher the scam as well. It seems that a seller builds up a "good reputation" credit with eBay/PayPal, wherein if you successfully sell and ship a few items on eBay, either with tracking info provided or with good feedback received, then your funds' release dates get bumped up. I don't know the exact math involved here, but I noticed that after a few months of selling pretty heavily, that shortly after dropping a package in to the post, the funds would be released to my PayPal account. That is much different than when I was a green seller, and I had to wait until the (tracked) item was received by the buyer before the funds were released.

I wonder if this guy built up a really good reputation as a seller with PayPal, and then changed his methods to "marking as shipped" in eBay rather than providing tracking info, and PayPal was releasing his funds early and he pulled all the funds into his bank account and then emptied it quickly. That's the best theory I have, otherwise the scam makes no sense at all.

As plausable a theory as any, I suppose. Still seems like the seller is just banking on the fact that PayPal won't go after them because, at the point you are describing, PayPal has the seller's name, bank account, and social security number.

Yes @deafmetal, I guess you are right. Seller had the Top Reliability Seller "cockade", and probably this changes relationship with PayPal.

@Mateo Yes, PayPal has seller's infos, but it's not so easy to regain money from someone who may not have a paycheck or attachable assets...

True, manuorru. That just makes it a cash grab by a desperate person more than a bankable scam. The seller will have trashed credit and quite possible a low level criminal charge for a few hundred bucks at best. Bath salts are a helluva drug.
