Hello dear soundtrackers.
First time poster here, hope you can help me out.
I want to get my fingers on the recently release of Artemiev's score for 'Solaris' by Mirumir. However, there are two kinds of releases for this and I wonder what the difference is. One of the releases says "Original Soundtrack" (the colorful one with yellow-written letters) while the other says "Music from the Motion Picture" (the black and white cover with purple-written letters).
Are they different pressings or what's the deal here? Anybody knows?
Thanks,
Henrik.

I believe the Original Soundtrack is music from the actual film, while the other version is music recorded at a later date.

This has been discussed at length previously in the forum, I believe here, if you want to go through the pages: http://www.spintheblackestcircles.com/f ... -heads-up/

(I wish this forum had a search feature - amongst other needed things).

Hi Henry, welcome to the forum.

As Rasmus said, we did discuss this at length in that thread. I suggest you read it. It's quite confusing, there are 4 different versions of Solaris being released at present. It takes a while to get your head around, but the gist of it is: 'Original Soundtrack' = the original film music, 'Music From' = re-recordings of the soundtrack that Artemiev performed in 1990.

The one with the yellow writing, as you describe it, is the original soundtrack on Mirumir. Superior Viaduct is also releasing the same thing, but with handmade covers.

rasmus & cat, thanks a lot for responding so fast.
I'll probably go for the release with the yellow letters and italian poster art then, which i guess is the original then. if the source then turns out to suck I can always buy the re-recording then and I'll still have this awesome looking cover.
good speed to you guys.
with kindness,
henrik.

You're welcome, Henrik. And good choice - that's the edition I went for. Looks awesome, with previously unseen photos from the Tarkovsky archives too! Really nice package.

Hey Henry,

Good stuff. Just to add - where are you based? I only ask because the Superior Viaduct version of the original score (the Mirumir release you've settled on, with Italian poster art) is actually being released with three separate hand-made sleeves...so, if you're Stateside you may want to factor that in perhaps! It seems Boomkat will be stocking them here in the UK, so I now have to decide whether I want another version for my collection! As it is, In one month I've gone from one prized copy of the original Melodiya release from '72, to enough editions to open my own store called Scott's Super Solaris Soundtrack Store! ;)

hehe, i would love to come by your cool named store and give the different releases a comparison. but i am an unemployed, broke-ass dane living in copenhagen who's currently saving all of his money for a london/frizzi-trip in october, so for now i'll settle with one mirumir-copy :-)

Welcome on board Henry! I recommend you a lot, to get in the future, also the re-recorded music of Solaris and not forgetting the Stalker/Mirror OST, all the three recent Mirumir-Artemiev releases deserve a place in every collection! ;)

I love the Superior Viaduct covers and the folks at that label are awesome to deal with. They told me via email recently that they're also doing something similar for The Stalker/Mirror ost. I know Mirumir is releasing that rerecording as well, but I haven't yet seen a listing from them for the ost.

Another Dane, cool :)

I'm awaiting both the OST and the re-recording from Norman Records. I figure the original soundtrack will be more "raw" and the re-recording more "clean", but I might be wrong.

Anyone know where the cheapest place to get the Mirumir original version if you're in the USA? I know that US version is cheaper but I don't like the covers.

I recently picked up the re-recorded version and can say it is becoming one of my favourite soundtracks by a long way. I need the original too so will order from Normans (thanks Re Animated Cat)

I am definitely excited about the Superior Viaduct edition of Stalker/MIrror. I'm really not a fan of the Solaris music at all, I've not heard the remake though. The Stalker/Mirror music just has a darker, more sinister edge to it that I really like.

They told me via email that it was "forthcoming." I asked if that meant this year and they said "hopefully."
