@deafmetal: in the early 2000s when i was living in Cape Town i used to go to Mabu Records almost 2x a week. Sugar from Mabu (the guy from the film who re-discovered Rodriguez and brought him to South Africa) was really surprised that i picket the record because back then nobody cared about Rodriguez anymore but i went mad. within a few years i bought multiple copies of all the original albums for arround 5-10€ a pop. it was a great time and Sugar always told me nice stories about him. It was so strange to see him and Rodriguez on the screen after all these years. never even could imagine there will be a movie about Rodriguez. definitely a favorite of mine...

@static, what model reel to reel is that? I am looking for one, my parents gave me a box of reels and I need a player to check them out. don't want to spend a whole lot on a machine but want a nice one, any thoughts you might have is appreciated.

@Tim it's an Akai GX-630D. The nice thing about a few of the Akai decks is aside from sounding very nice they have tape heads that are coated in a thin layer of glass to avoid wear. So in theory they never need replacing.



Another nice thing about this deck is that it's direct drive, so no belts to worry about.

I can also recommend the Pioneer RT-707 and RT-909 (belt drive but easy to replace). Technics also made some very nice RTR machines but they're rather pricey. Teac also made some nice ones, but most that you'll find will need new belts at the bare minimum.
