For me the cover art for a release is pretty important when it comes to buying. Sure the music comes first but an ugly cover artwork sure lessens the experience for me to be honest. Most soundtrack releases gets the artwork SOOOOO right (A Field In England, Day of the Dead, Maniac, The Fog, The Devil's Business, Re-Animator, Poltergeist), but some of them does not.

DW has continually had great cover art but Room 237 and NY Ripper really let me down. I have the utmost respect for what Spencer and the artists he is working with are doing but these two releases does not make the cut for me. Room looks half done and Ripper looks like a poor amateur heavy metal record. I'm sure I'll catch a lot of shit for saying this but I'm just telling it how I see it. Maybe DW has spoiled us rotten up until now...

So what did the rest of you guys think of the artwork for these two releases? And what is you cover artwork faves?

Fave: Maniac (DW), Drive (Mondo),Fog (DW), Donnie Darko (DW)

I do like Room 237 cover art, but i'm with you on New York Ripper. Haven't seen the film yet, so im not well informed of the film.

The Room 237 cover looks as disjointed and unfinished as the film so...accurate representation? The only good thing about that movie was the score and it is better than good. Great even. I like the NYR cover fine, but my favorite DWs are Halloween III and Prince of Darkness. The cover art to Superior Viaduct's Solaris releases, Poltergeist and Timecrimes from Mondo, DOTD from Waxwork, and The Hired Hand on Scissor Tail are all standouts in recent memory.

Great topic. It is funny how peoples tastes differ. There are few mentioned above as favorites that I didn't care for (Maniac, Halloween III).
I really like the New York Ripper and Assualt on Precint 13 but think Room 237 is weak.

Favorites from DW: They Live, The Fog, Manchester Morgue, Let the Right One In.
Other Favorites:The Kindred (love this cover), Suspria, Halloween, Creepshow, Solaris

I like the art on Assault on Precinct 13 as it looks like it was taken from a promo booklet or something. I agree on House/Cemetery & Living Dead, those two are my favorites. And I agree on NY Ripper- the film is just too mean to have cheesy artwork. I don't feel there's anything 'comic' like about it.

I didn't like the art for Season of the Witch until I had the record & figured out what it was (I hadn't seen the film in a long time) and read how it was conceived.

The Devils Business cover is really good, too. I haven't seen the film nor bought it.

bitewerks: I don't think the N.Y. Ripper artwork is "comic" - even though it's a homage of sorts to the old EC comics. I think the colors, mood, composition etc. (and the killer's damn crooked fingers) make it quite unsettling.
