This really is fantastic and encapsulates everything that makes Nicolai the true master. It's hands down one of the library records ever made it ranges from incredible blustering psych to moody beautiful yet eerie ballards to almost medical baroke interludes all touched by his incredible hand , sorry if I'm gushing but I can't tell you enough how good this and is absolutely worth shelling out for if you see it in the wild (even if it means you miss out on a months worth of reissues)

Funnily enough have just found one in the wild..albeit for £100. Is it worth that kind of money?? (I guess that is probably less than what may typically get spent on 4 or 5 re-issues a month!)

don't understand how people try to pick up every single reissue surfacing. what's the meaning of this?

i rather purchase and savour one crispy OG than hoarding ten crappy reissues.

for example: the last Umiliani repressings (Problemi D’Oggi, Tra Scienza E Fantascienza,…) are not recommended as they sound weak, the Roger Roger - Musique Idiote OG can be picked up for the same price as the repressing and sounds even better, the list goes on and on…(sorry if I ruin somebody’s business but labels like Death Waltz are reference class for me and so they should be for all the other reissue labels. but that’ another story!)

people seem to pick up way more stuff they can handle instead of enjoying the music and vinyl as a medium…

I liked Problemi D'Oggi reissue, seemed better quality than Tra Scienza though I do not have an original to compare (or the $300+ to buy one)

@million Oh to be able to buy £300 original releases. And surely you'd only be able to tell the difference by listening to both? And I certainly don't have the money to do so, so I'll stick with the reissues and only imagine what an original would sound like. If it means my family and kids can enjoy being introduced to and listening to a wide variety of music and enjoy it also, well for me that'll do just fine.

Well thats not strictly true, a 1970 Original of Musique Idiote hasn't been offered on Discogs since before November 2014 average price of around £20.

Their are lots of exeptional library reissues around Schema springs to mind as a company that does them so well.

Not everyone has endless amounts of cash to drop on originals and some folks just want to listen to cool music so a reissue more than suffices. Plus if you have acees to 5 amazing reissue for the cost of one original finacially it makes sense to bag the 5 !

Another slightly different POV on this. I have started ponying up for the occasional $100 range OG - and as I am on a budget, I need to save up for these - and all of the reissues simply slow me down from saving up for the records I really have my eye on. It isn't that I don't want all of the reissues, but every time I buy a couple and then watch as one of the records I really want passes by because I don't have the coin, I vow to redouble my efforts to avoid the reissues (with minimal success).

I can't say for sure why I'd rather have 1 OG than 3-4 reissues, but I would. As a record geek, I have always had a preference for aged records - maybe as artifacts of the era the music was made.

One thing I do know is that I don't have time to listen to that many records, so quantity isn't always a good thing. I already have a 20+ year collection that doesn't get enough time on the platter.

Unfortunately, the pricing for the OGs is rapidly escalating, so my days of even $100 OGs might be waning. Not sure I am ready to go much beyond that, but a couple years ago I wouldn't have believed I'd be spending $100. I used to advocate patience and frugality - and managed to snag more than a few of my grails at pennies on the dollar. But I am less patient now - and need my fixes on a regular basis or I get the shakes. where was I? Oh yah, trying to find copies of those Lesiman reissues...

The originals are nice but prices are just too high. A good example is the upcoming Micalizzi on Sonor Music Editions. I bid on a recent auction and was even willing to spend $250. I got blown out, I think it sold for around $500. So I definitely am not complaining about a $25 reissue! I say keep em coming. Can't afford asking prices like $1000 for Zoo Folle and $500 for Gli Animali and probably never will.

I dont mind reissues, but im not a fan of half assed reissues. I dont want to criticise labels but I think if you are going to reissue something you should go the whole hog to make it potentially equal or better in worth than the original somehow, different maybe. If you consider the reissue doesnt deserve that extra mile then maybe it shouldnt be reissued?

I also think of you are buying alot of reissues you should also try and pick up some ogs too. After all without the ogs there would be no reissues.

@dollarhyde Very wise words and ones I agree with. Unfortunately I wouldn't know the quality of many of the originals so probably just accept what I'm presented with without question. I am looking to expand my knowledge though, and you good folks help with that immensely. I'm also looking to purchase some originals before the year is out hopefully. I'm finding it harder and harder to find the time to research each release as much as I'd like to though. Perhaps a library end of year list is in order of all the good eggs released? At the moment Sonor and Cometa are doing a really great job of introducing me to some really fabulous music.

@vapour my comment about picking up ogs was in regard to vinyl in general not just libraries. Admittedly libraries are a bit fickle, they are generally more scarce and don't turn up in the usual places records do, there are a
lot of libraries out there that are overpriced imo, however you can still grab good deals here and there. But it's also a question of what you really like as libraries cover all styles of music.
I think it's very easy to get misguided by inflated prices on the second hand market.

@vapour I guess it depends what you mean by value I hate the idea of looking at a record as a monetary asset, although I guess this is what dealers do on a daily basis. However I think a reissue should only make a record more well known in peoples minds so therefore makes the music more widely desirable, therefore making the original more valuable, but I'm not talking about monetary value here. I think as soon as you start talking about prices it gets all screwy, for example that picasso it is no longer a picasso its simply 90 million dollars.
In other words would the buyer pay 90 mil. if he know for certain he could not sell it for a penny.

@dollar & @meyer: i also think reissues make rare records more popular and desireable. more freaks appear that want to settle with a original pressing. this has been the case several times. on the other hand you have reissues that ruin the "market value" (i hate to use this term when talking about records). see the latest repress of the Inception soundtrack for example. i remember the 2010 first pressing was selling for 200-400€ only a few months ago. just check popsike. the Inception record is probably not the best example because the first pressing sounded like making popcorn in a camper while driving on a dirt track, but there are certain reissues that make the value of previous pressings drop. especially reissues of reissues as the latest reissue always seems to be the best or most popular ones (see Umilianis To-Day's Sound for example).

my standpoint is and will remain the same. i will always prefer the original artifact from the time when the record was released, except you have a case like the Inception record. this is what i teach my kids. they are very young but already know how to treat and respect an old record and know the difference between the nostalgic value and mass consumption…it's simple mathematics
