Anyone else like to share? I'd be reallyy intrigued to see what you all choose - it's been a really big year for vinyl soundtracks IMO. So -- my own 10 includes mix of originals/re-issues, which has probably undervalued the re-issues a little by doing it that way but I don't wanna do two lists sorry!

Brilliantly done game-changer for the vinyl re-issue market this year, scores high marks on every level (especially if you attended the church-set 16mm screening/launch with real fog and a lighthouse!), but especially (and crucially) because the expanded music is all sublime and hair-raising. All hail JC and his mucker/oppo Alan Howarth! (and crazy bastards like Spencer Hickman, who obviously likes a bit of a gamble....)

Huge release for an upcoming label, and like The Fog, everything about this sings....packaging, art and expanded score from unearthed master tapes (alongside Cast+Crew attended launch/screenings of such an underrated and brilliant Romero masterwork) all point to a label that has real heart and passion, great taste, and even bigger things to come. I'm in!

What to say? This lived on my walkman for such a long time, it started to seem like my whole world was Martinez flavoured for a while. We fucking love this score, right? And Invada get all the props in the known universe (and beyond) for sorting this one out, finally. A true holy grail on wax, and would have been way higher on my year-end list if I didn't know every note of the score front and back already.

Oh joy....totally out of nowhere, some label I've never heard of drop one of my all-time favourite scores (to one of my all time favourite films!) with almost no fanfare, beautiful sleeve art, no pissing around with "limited,collectible,coloured,smell-o-vision" variants --- just a great priced slab of beautiful black wax that sounds stunning. Christmas day tunes sorted.

Before the CD came out around ten years ago, I was obsessed with this film, with the beautiful music, and with this Bruce Langhorne guy. I taped all of the music from my TV speaker in the 80s, with a portable tape deck. I still have the tape. I dropped the opening and closing themes onto compilations for people and it never failed to generate questions. I learned to play the damn score on guitar, flute, banjo......I was a regular One-Man-Hired-Hand-Band! And I guess I'm cheating by topping my 2013 list with this, as technically it was issued in Nov '12. But there was no way this wasn't going to ne my number 1. With a bullet. And a banjo. Just fucking get hold of it if you can, you won't regret it.

Peace out everyone - it's been a wild year, and I've met some decent guys through this forum (but no damn girls!!). Please drop your own top ten if you get a chance, I'm very curious to see what's floated your boats!

That american title is hated by Polanski, and I agree with him.
Dance of the Vampires (the officiel title, less fun, it's true), as classic as it is, is much more adapted to the film.
In France, we only know it as LE BAL DES VAMPIRES (direct translation).

As for the release from Bronzerat, I confirm it's a (vampire) killer !

@deathwaltz - I was really bored by the music. I truly enjoyed the DW packaging for it...I think the holographic/reflective look was so awesome, and the picture disc looked amazing. I was just expecting a lot more from the music I guess after all the hype had built up around it for so long. The same went for the movie for me too...I found the movie to be a bit dull and uninteresting throughout most of it.

Just so no one yells at me - I did watch the movie twice to make sure, and I've listened to the whole soundtrack at least 4 times. There just isn't anything interesting or exciting in there for me. I think I'm just burned out on synth horror scores....no one is doing anything creative or different. It is all sounding the same. I didn't feel that the Maniac remake did anything to help push horror forward, nor did the soundtrack.

I agree on the Goblin EP - not great....... But I loved the Maniac soundtrack. Cold yet moody and atmospheric - one of my favourite DW releases of the year.

Looking at the rest of your selections - I love the Nils Frahm LP too. With all the talk of pre-orders on here, I was amused to find myself buying tickets to see him live for end October 2014!!! Crazy - I wonder if I'll remember to turn up........

@pitch - that's pretty funny! That is quite a long ways away. Maybe set a calendar reminder on your phone?! I would love to see him live. I really would love to just see more modern classical/chamber music live to be honest, but not much of that is ever performed here at all. Apparently that kind of music isn't too big here in the states, unfortunately.

@unpopularpoet - Yes! I actually was lucky enough to win an unpunched test press edition of the Spelljammer Vol 2 from STB...so I have that plus the Die Hard edition. I LOVE STB Records! I, so far, own all of their vinyl, the only die hard I do not have is the Brimstone Coven...I simply liked the Sorcerer blue edition better than the die hard.

@unpopularpoet - I enjoyed the Traitors album, but I haven't played it too much lately. I've been too much into black metal as of late to go into hardcore/stoner rock too much lately. I did get the glow in the dark Doctor Doom album too, but wasn't that thrilled with the music after a couple of listens. Overall though - STB is one hell of a metal label, and put outs some of the finest packaging & vinyl I've ever seen for metal on vinyl.

@lazyben, which edition of the Bobby Beausoleil 4-LP reissue did you get? The label is currently selling the third edition, which is all crazy colors. I want to pick this one up after Christmas, but I was wondering what the sound quality was like on this edition.

@reddeye, I got the one that came out this year which is probably the third edition (heard about it on here somewhere). Crazy colors and splattering. I suspect the source for these recordings is not the highest of fidelity so it probably doesn't really matter what it's pressed on. I'm really a black vinyl guy given a choice but haven't noticed a problem with this at all.

I'm not obsessive about colours either - but have to say, that third pressing is bloody wild! Psychedelic, maan...very tempting. But how does the actual music stack up?

The music is psychedelic, pretty dark and heavy. Sort of like saucerful/pompeii era floyd on heavy downers or tangerine dream jamming with sabbath. I think it's all instrumental and he certainly seems to have been a very good guitarist. It would probably be stretching to claim everything across all 4 discs is essential but there is some great stuff on there if you're into this sort of thing.

There are some youtube vids with samples to give you an idea, I did check those out before I pulled the trigger.

I own the "Lucifer Rising" CD-R that came out back in 1999 on White Dog, and this stopped me from getting the 4-LP set in the first and second editions. I've decided to junk the CD-R -- I've been selling most of them off on Discogs because I don't trust their longevity, and I can use the money for vinyl -- and pick up the third edition. I just need to get some post-holiday money first.

Here is my list for the year, probably most of you will have a lot of these already, but this is my list of what I have managed to purchase throughout the year.Sorry I've been a bit slack and just put the name of the soundtrack.



10. New York Ripper - Classic chilled out 70's grooves
Nice murky green vinyl,fan of the comic style artwork. Fits best out of the new sleeves.

9. Day of the Dead - A lot of music here, quite calming,reminds me of tangerine dream a lot. Amazing variant red/green vinyl, probably my favourite this year. Clever artwork but not blown away.

8. The Fog - Always seems to go on late at night and always sets the mood perfectly. Love my Clear with splatter. Top artwork from the strangeness of one of the Chapman brothers



7. Possession - this to me is a bit Goblin meets future sound of london quite an up album. Black vinyl, Great art on cover

6. Evil Dead - I wasn't gonna bother with this one, but so glad I did. It's dark and menacing and moving and melodic, takes a while to get into, but is just the right amount of scary without being un-listenable.The murky green/brown vinyl is nice, but have enough 'murky'colour mixes now for this year. Packaging is great, inserts fantastic. Just good all round.

5.Les Frisson Des Vampires - ooowhh this one is nice,dark pink floyd sounding guitar ( don't be put off by that)70's medival and gothic vibes, vampires - female screams for the taste of blood
Black vinyl,nice artwork, art nouveau style!? Mucha.




4. Room 237 - I know this one is a favourite on the forum, this is fantastic stuff, very uplifting, currently played more than anything else,again Tangerine Dream influences here I'm sure. just wish it was a little bit longer. Nice vinyl colour split green/red. Fan of the artwork fitting with the music.

3.Maniac - I think this is Death Waltz' best release this year for an overall package,the music is unbelievably good,the metallic cover,and nice silver blood splatter. I feel this matches last years Drive in many ways for style. Great great electronic music at it's best.

2.Kiss of the Damned - this was an umm aaah shall I shan't I, bought too many already, but knew I would buy it at some point, if only for the great cover! Beautiful music, hypnotic, mesmerising, really sets a great mood mixing instrumental and songs, which it hard to do I think successfully. Only 1 track I'm not so keen on out of 14. This is a must have!

Quite a few scores made my top-of-2013 list. I won't rehash the ones that have been discussed already on the forum, either on this thread or elsewhere (although I did quite enjoy "The Devil's Business"); also, I'm not going to stick with a purely vinyl list - a good score is a good score.

This year, Silva Screen has been reissuing old Doctor Who scores for the 50th anniversary of the show, and I've been picking them up. Two of them made my top list: "The Caves of Androzani" and "Ghost Light." Great old BBC Radiophonic stuff here, and the music sounds great as a score, with melodic progression and all that, and not just a collection of sound effects. One of the old scores got a limited 10" release -- "The Krotons" -- which is also worth picking up. Silva Screen is going to do an 11-CD collection of Doctor Who music -- all housed in a wooden TARDIS. I've love to get it, but it's going to be a little over $200.

Henry Mancini's "Fear" got a reissue this year, and this made my list. Creepy, crawly, with bits of off-kilter carnival music.

"Dark Souls" OST -- not the video game, but some French-Norwegian thing, scored by Wojciech Golczewski. The cover art makes the movie look like its direct to DVD: a guy with a cordless drill putting it to a woman's third eye. However, the music is quite nice. Brooding classical with strings. Dark ambient with piano. The occasional bit of electronics or guitar. You can hear samples on the Screen Archives site.

1. Last House on the Left - is my no.1 of the year, I had never heard it before so it was all new to me. I'd never seen the infamous film or even heard of David Hess. The songs written on here are just a different class, so touching and emotional,twisted crazy lyrics and weird and wacky hill billy intervals, space trips, sounds which I must say send us all a bit mad at our house and get us up and dancing round in circles. My little girl calls 'Wait for the Rain' the castle song. I love stuff you can really sing to - like this. It adds to an album with a few quality vocal tracks but it is a skill that few have. God bless David Hess and R.I.P.
I was so pleased to get the limited red/pink vinyl too, but I didn't really mind what arrived as they were both really sweet.

Can't wait for the Hills have Eyes next - more madness



A few more soundtracks that I bought this year that are fantastic, not that they all came out this year though. The Tarantino ones are the best he's done to date I would say. Have a good Christmas and don't drink too much eh! ;)
